Sonnet 81
Sonnet 81 is one of the 154 sonnets written by William Shakespeare, which were published in a quarto titled Shakespeare’s Sonnets in 1609. It is a part of the Fair Youth series of sonnets.〔Kiparsky, Paul. “The Rhythmic Structure of English Verse.” Linguistic Inquiry 8.2 (1977): 189-247. JSTOR. Web. 29 Sept. 2015. ()〕 ==Structure== A Shakespearean sonnet, also known as the English sonnet is characteristically written in iambic pentameter, in lines consisting of ten syllables with an alternating pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables, though most sonnets don’t strictly follow this rule. It has fourteen lines, three quatrains and a couplet, and follows an abab cdcd efef gg rhyme scheme. Another common sonnet type is the Petrarchan sonnet, also known as the Italian sonnet. The Petrarchan sonnet is also characteristically written in iambic pentameter. However, unlike the Shakespearean sonnet the Petrarchan sonnet is divided into an octet made up of two quatrains and a sestet made of two tercets. The octet usually proposes a question or problem to be resolved by the sestet. The point that the sonnet turns from question to resolution is usually the ninth line in the poem an is known as the volta.
